Engineering

Engineering is a stream of education that includes the application of Science, Technology, and Mathematics to establish, design, develop, and keep machines, structures, software, hardware, and system & services. Engineering fields provide a range of career opportunities across all industries, making it one of the most sought-after courses pursued by students after Class 12th, especially those students who are clear of their 12th from the Science stream.

As per the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) statistics for the year 2021-22, there are almost 6000 engineering and technology institutes in India, with a total annual intake of 23,61,755 Engineer candidates. A 2019-20 report of the All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) powered by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Engineering is the third major stream with 38.80 lakh students enrolled at the undergraduate level. Male students enrolled in Engineering and Technology is 71.6 percent whereas female enrolment is 28.4 percent. Students who want to study Engineering in India can choose from nearly 100 courses. Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are some of the most popular courses. The Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT), National Institutes of Technology(NIT), Indian Institutes of Information Technology(IIIT), and some private technical institutes such as Birla Institute of Science, Technology(BITS) Pilani and Vellore Institutes of Technologies(VIT) are some of the best institutes to pursue engineering from. According to Dream, there are more than 3,400 colleges offering engineering courses.

Eligibility Criteria for UG courses of Engineering

  • Candidates passed the 12th class with 60% marks.
  • Candidates passed their 12th with science stream as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics Subjects.
  • Admission is granted based on the entrance exam scorecard.
  • Different Institutions need different entrance exams to score for taking admission.

Entrance Exams for Engineering Courses

Jee Advanced: JEE Advanced is a 3-hour long online national-level entrance exam conducted by one of the IITs every year. Those students who passed in Jee Main entrance exams are eligible to give Jee Advanced entrance exam.

BITSAT: Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences conducts (BITS Admission Test) to screen the candidates for admission to various engineering courses in Information Technology.

VITEEE:VIT Vellore conducts VITEEE, an entrance exam for admissions into different UG Engineering courses offered by its participating campuses.

SRMJEEE: SRM Institute of Science and Technology conducts the Joint Engineering Entrance examination for admission to UG engineering programs on the basis of candidates' scores in the SRMJEEE Entrance exam.

KEAM: Kerala conducts the Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical (KEAM) entrance exam to provide admission into various engineering colleges in the Kerala state.

GATE: GATE is the most reputed exam in engineering. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE) is an entrance exam conducted to grant admissions to postgraduate engineering courses in IITs. The GATE Entrance Exam is conducted by different IITs on a rotational basis. It is conducted once a year and time duration of the exam is 3 hours. More than 1000 universities accept students with GATE scores to grant them admission to PG engineering courses.

Engineering Courses

There are many courses available in Engineering. Below are some famous Engineering courses popular in India

Mechanical Engineering: Mechanical Engineering is a course of design, manufacture, inspection, and maintenance of machinery, equipment, and components such as vehicles, engines, aerospace products, weapon systems, robotics, turbines, construction, and farm machinery, tools & devices. Mechanical Engineering is also associated with the management of control systems and instruments for measuring the performance and status of machinery.

Electrical Engineering: Electrical Engineering is a popular course among students in India, Electrical engineers work on the electrical design, testing, manufacture, construction, control, monitoring, and inspection of electrical and electronic devices, components, machines, and systems. These services range in size from the smallest microchips to large transmission and power generation systems. This includes almost all things from broadcast engineering to electromagnetic devices, computer systems, telecommunications, and many more.

Civil Engineering: Civil Engineering is involved in the design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of big civil infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, apartments, malls, and dams. Civil engineers work in sub-disciplines such as environmental engineering, structural engineering, or surveying. civil engineering was created initially to differentiate it from military engineering, Civil Engineers work with both public and private sectors.

Computer Engineering: AIn today’s time, Computer Engineering is one of the most popular courses in Engineering. Computer engineers make plans for computer hardware, systems, networks, and software. Computer engineering provides other services like electrical engineering and computer science, as well as software engineering and design.

Aerospace Engineering: Aerospace Engineer offers manufacture and testing of aircraft and spacecraft, including all parts and components, and focus on design. Covering everything from automobiles aerodynamics and efficiencies to electrical control and navigation systems, most of the expertise is also used for other vehicles, such as cars, trucks, bikes, etc.

Nuclear Engineering: Nuclear engineers provide services on the design, manufacture, construction, operation, and testing of the equipment, systems, and processes for the production and control of nuclear power. From nuclear power plant reactors to particle accelerators, nuclear engineers work on other factors such as monitoring and the storage of nuclear waste in order to protect people, and nature from potentially harmful situations.

Biomedical Engineering: Biomedical engineers create the design of systems, equipment, and other devices for use in healthcare and medicine. Working with doctors, therapists and researchers, biomedical engineers are capable of fulfilling all the requirements of healthcare professionals.

Chemical Engineering: Chemical engineers utilize physics, chemistry, and engineering principles for the design of equipment, systems, and processes for purifying raw materials for mixing, compounding, and processing chemicals for a variety of products. Carrying out steps on a commercial scale, chemical engineers are involved in steps ranging from petroleum refining to fermentation and the production of biomolecules.

Engineering as a Carrier

Engineering is a very good career option for students. Aside from the good job prospects and security, as well as the higher average salaries, engineering is a good career because It provides students the opportunity to work for the benefit & good of society. Engineering is a very reputable job in India whether it is through improved transportation systems, providing better medical devices and technologies, finding new cleaner energy sources, increasing living standards for less developed nations, or solving the problems of global hunger, engineering plays a part in changing people’s lives for the better. An engineering career can offer you a great many personal benefits, such as travel, high wages of pay, and good job security, but it also provides you the opportunity to use your knowledge, skills, and experience to make a real difference in the world. That’s why called Engineers can do anything.

The advantage of pursuing an engineering degree is that Students can pursue BE/B.Tech, ME/M.Tech to become an expert engineer in various fields. Usually, students prefer to pursue a master's degree abroad due to the many scopes in companies like NASA, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Amazon, HP and many more. With a degree in engineering, Students can work as mechanical engineers, aerospace engineers, environment engineers, electrical engineers, civil engineers, software developers, technical managers, etc according to the engineering course.
